Face Front! Friday! The Incredible Growing Comfort Zone

Math is not among my superpowers.

Unless you count taking the same calculus class three times at three different institutions. I never failed it… just never did quite well enough to avoid taking it again.

So what happens when you take a math professor like my friend Judy and a marketing professor like me, and our powers combine?

You get exponential growth.

That was us last week at the UNM Mentoring Institute Conference. Dr. Judy Vogel and I shared how our INFUSE Framework and Mentoring Web models help students build networks that can help them realize their desired academic and career outcomes.

And through it all, I realized something: I wasn’t always in my comfort zone. But I was still safe.

Your comfort zone is what you do every day: familiar, repeatable, steady. But your safe zone? That’s wider than you think. It surrounds your comfort zone. It’s where you step out, try the thing, meet the people, say yes before you’re ready.

So much of what’s outside your comfort zone is still safe, and that’s where the better version of you is waiting.

That’s the truth behind every superpower origin story. The hero doesn’t grow by staying home. They grow by stepping forward and realizing the power was inside them all along.

So here’s your challenge this weekend:
What’s one step that feels uncomfortable but probably safe?
