Face Front! Friday! Make Your WISH
On Tuesday, we Permission to be Powerful, and how that permission must ultimately come from you. Yourself. Give yourself permission.
It made me think about an early-career conversation I had with my supervisor. I felt like my career was stalled, and I couldn’t gain traction. So, I asked my boss what was holding me back.
“You need to speak up more in meetings,” he said.
“But what if I don’t have anything to say?”
His response? “I don’t know. That’s your problem. Figure it out.”
That stung back then, but with just a couple of decades to think about this, I have a better idea of what he meant. Or what I’ve decided he should have meant.
I’d call it a challenge instead of a problem, for starters.
And for seconders, here’s what I’ve figured out:
If you’re in a meeting, a workshop, or a classroom, walk in knowing that there’s a reason for you to be there. Your presence isn’t random. Your perspective matters. Even if no one tells you why you’re there, take my boss’s advice: Figure it out.
Ask yourself WISH: Why’m I Sitting Here?
And have an answer.
Find your value. Share your voice. Contribute with confidence.
Control your career.
