Face Front! Friday! Translating her Triumph

On Tuesday, we looked at how Maria’s origin story could be told just like a superhero origin. And what a story… with heroes, villains, titanic challenges, and the awakening of amazing power within a small child.

Now, we translate that story into something Maria can share and carry into her career: a confident professional narrative that communicates her purpose and who she is.

Recall that as a two-year-old, she faced her nemesis. Leukemia threatened her childhood and her family’s happiness and stability.  Through her strength and the collective courage of her family and support team, Maria battled through treatment and won her cancer-crushing battle by age four.

Here’s how Maria might describe herself now:

“I am a Master of Healthcare Management candidate whose commitment to patient-centered care is shaped by my own early experience as a childhood leukemia survivor. My time as a young patient helped me develop my deep empathy for families navigating the emotional and financial challenges of the healthcare system.

“My personal history drives my passion for improving care environments, strengthening support systems, and reducing the barriers that make healthcare difficult to access, especially for vulnerable patients. I now bring my academic training and lived insight into all that compassionate, equitable care truly requires.

“I am now preparing for a career dedicated to advocacy, program development, and system redesign, ensuring that no child or family faces their healthcare journey alone.”
