Tuesday Tales: Imposed Identity
Are you hiding? Do you want to be hiding?
There are a couple of origin stories on my mind right now.
You know about them, you’ve seen them in the movies… well, sort of.
The first one involves a mighty Norse god.
The “sort of” part is that the movies haven’t represented this superhero as he first appeared in the comics.
There, as originally told, the character’s secret identity wasn’t the hero, but it was the human who was presented as a doctor (heroic!) but also as physically damaged and frail.
The hero didn’t choose this alter-ego, it was imposed upon him from the outside. Living life as such weakened specimen was a sentence handed down to him as punishment for his prideful ways.
The other story is that of an alien from a distant planet, the subject of many familiar movies and TV shows and cartoons.
He also had his human identity, as a Kansas farm boy, placed upon him.
He discovered early on that he was capable of so much more, but maintained the alter-ego as a meek, ordinary human all so he could better fit in.
Of course, these are just fragments of two well-known origin stories.
Here’s the real question: Do they apply to you too?
Are you concealing your superpowers?
Is it because you’re afraid you’ll be punished if you shine too brightly?
Do you think it’s just easier for you to fit in than to rise above?
Think about it.
We’ll be back Friday to talk about how you’re capable of so much more. About how you own your origin story.
