Tuesday Tales: The Kid Conquers Cancer
One of the greatest privileges of my work is helping people uncover the deeper story behind who they are today: their origin story.
The superhero saga that explains their courage, their calling, and their direction.
Recently, someone shared their extraordinary origin story with me:
Most superheroes discover their abilities after a dramatic, life-changing moment.
Maria’s discovery arrived before she even learned her ABCs.
At just two and a half, she faced her first villain: Leukemia. A sinister invader determined to steal her childhood. Armed with tiny veins of steel, stubborn courage, and her super-team of heroes in scrubs, she fought through two years of treatment and won her first impossible battle by age four.
The fight left scars. Every hero carries scars.
But it also awakened her greatest power: empathy.
Empathy forged in hospital halls, tempered in the quiet fires of fear, fortified by steady presence of people who refused to let her face the darkness alone.
While other kids pretended to be superheroes, Maria had no choice but to become one.
Today, at 24, she’s in the next chapter of her training, earning her master’s degree in healthcare. Her mission is clear: to confront the villains that still threaten patients and families like fear, inequity, financial barriers, and turn them aside. To ensure that no child walks that perilous path without support.
Once a young patient fighting for her own life, she now stands ready to fight for others.
Living proof that even the smallest hero can rise and return even stronger.
This is what your origin story can do.
It can reveal purpose.
It can clarify direction.
It can strengthen confidence.
It can propel a career forward.
Come back Friday to see how this powerful origin story transforms into a strong narrative Maria can use in her bio, her interviews, her networking, and her career.
