Tuesday Tales: Shared Moment Mentoring

Mentoring can involve life-long relationships.

It can also involve a single bit of shared wisdom.

Wisdom that becomes a life-long gift.

When I was a student, I once found myself in an elevator with a professor I knew of, respected deeply, but had never worked with.

He asked me how my work was going.

I nervously told him, sucking most of the air out of the elevator.

When reached our floor, he put his hand on my shoulder and told me this.

“Dave, praise highly and move in increments.”

Maybe he meant that in an “always cite your sources” way, not in any of a number of other possible ways. At that moment, I wasn’t certain.

Still….

Praise highly and move in increments.

Those words have stayed with me for decades, far longer than many other conversations.
