Face Front! Friday! Launch and Rebuild
On Tuesday we talked about what happens when your home planet explodes.
Your home wasn’t just a place… it was a version of life that felt stable. But then:
- An accident
- A family disruption
- A move you didn’t plan
- A career path that suddenly disappeared
When this happens, your story can sound messy as your life feels.
And messy stories make people nervous in conversations, not to mention job interviews and personal statements.
But your goal isn’t to hide the rupture.
The goal is to own it, frame it as formation.
Here’s a simple structure that works almost anywhere:
1. Name your disruption
Don’t dramatize it. Don’t bury it.
“Early in my career I went through a period where several major life changes happened in quick succession.”
2. Own the strengths that came out of it
“That period forced me to develop adaptability, long-range thinking, and a lot more empathy for people navigating transition.”
3. Connect your origin story to the value you bring now
“Those experiences are a big part of why I’m effective working with people and organizations going through change.”
That’s it.
You have your heroic origin story.
You need to share it in a way others can buy into. Admire.
Don’t worry about explaining how things got back to normal. You’ve got a new normal.
Explain how your disruption shaped you, the person sitting in the room today.
Your planet may have blown up.
You are building your new one.
