Face Front! Friday! Missing the Mentor, Missing the Point
On Tuesday, I let you know that I was stepping out of my comfort zone and reaching out to a wonderful mentor from the earliest days of my career. A person that I had not contacted in years. Decades.
So I did.
No response yet.
It would be easy to read too much into this. To assume it’s too late, or that the moment has passed. But that misses the point.
This wasn’t only about getting a reply.
It was about taking responsibility for something I let fade, and doing what I can to correct it.
I’m glad I reached out. Maybe I’ll hear back today.
And if I don’t… then maybe I reach out another long-lost connection.
So here’s the takeaway:
Don’t wait for some perfect moment.
Don’t assume the window has closed.
Don’t let silence stop you.
Reach out anyway.
Because professionalism isn’t just about building relationships well.
It’s about maintaining them. And, when necessary, trying to repair them.
