Tuesday Tales: Missing My Mystical Marketing Magi
Here’s today’s mentoring moment. I hope you find it useful.
This is an oft-told tale, especially if you’ve spoken to me or listened to Marketing vs. Sales, the podcast my pal Rob and I have been sharing for a couple of years now.
“Possessing only an MBA and lacking real work experience, Dave Aron wandered through jobs in retail and online shopping mall management. Facing an existential career crisis, he sought wisdom from the mystical marketing magi. They bestowed upon him the power of… a PhD. Thus transformed, he became DOCTOR DAVE, teaching, mentoring, and helping organizations solve marketing problems.”
(Yes, I still enjoy telling that story.)
But here’s the part I don’t tell often enough.
Those “mystical marketing magi”?
The people who shaped my thinking and changed my trajectory?
I let those relationships fade.
Not because anything went wrong.
No drama here.
Not because they stopped mattering.
Because I didn’t stay in touch.
Just neglect. Over many, many years.
And over this time, something important was lost.
This is a terrible thing to be bad at.
Can those relationships be restarted?
I’m going to try.
More on Friday.
