Tuesday Tales: That’s Not What I Was Looking For
Here’s today’s mentoring moment. I hope you find it useful.
Many of the most interesting careers begin the same way many great origin stories do:
You set out looking for one thing… but discover something else entirely.
Maybe you pursued a role because it looked like the dream job.
Maybe you chose a major because it seemed like the path to where you thought you wanted to go.
Maybe you joined an organization for one reason and stayed for a completely different one.
At first, the mission feels straightforward.
But along the way something unexpected happens.
A challenge appears that forces you to grow.
A mentor enters the story.
A new ability begins to reveal itself.
And slowly you realize the thing you thought you were chasing isn’t the real treasure.
The real treasure is the transformation that happens to you along the way.
Early in my own career, I thought I was simply taking a temporary teaching position out of necessity. My goal was modest: teach my classes well… and figure out what I’m going to do next.
But along the way, two mentors stepped into my story. They saw something in me that I couldn’t yet see in myself. Their guidance helped transform a struggling young instructor into someone capable of building a long-term career in marketing and teaching.
That’s the quiet pattern behind many successful careers.
People set out looking for something ordinary like a job, a paycheck, a line on a résumé.
And somewhere along the way they discover something much bigger.
A calling.
A new identity.
A strength they didn’t know they possessed.
And very often, somewhere along the way, someone steps into the story who helps them see the path a little more clearly.
So wherever you are in your career right now, keep an eye on the unexpected turns in your path.
Sometimes the opportunity you’re chasing isn’t the real point of the story.
The real story is the person you’re becoming along the way.
Come back on Friday to see how this might apply to you’re story.
