Tuesday Tales: We’ve Got a Situation

Here’s today’s mentoring moment. I hope you find it useful.

In one of the biggest movies ever, one of the quietest lines has the most impact.

“Come on. We got a situation.”

In the box office smash Avengers: Infinity War, we see both the mentor, Tony Stark (aka Iron Man) and the protégé, Peter Parker (aka Spider-Man) stuck aboard an alien craft rapidly leaving Earth. Their fellow superhero, Dr. Strange, is being tortured by a powerful enemy. They are definitely way out of their comfort zones.

None of them are supposed to be there but they are. They have no choice but to improvise. To rely on each other… to trust each other.

When you step out of your comfort zone, you are still safe. In this silver screen scenario, it certainly might not seem that way. The billionaire genius Tony Stark handing life-and-death responsibility over to the unproven teenager is not how they would have planned it.

But Stark was wise enough to know he (for once) didn’t have all the answers.

“What’s your plan?”

And Parker enthusiastically accepted the challenge, using his own resources (and “this really old movie, Aliens”) to come up with a solution that save the day. Or at least saved that scene.

Whether you are stepping out of your comfort zone, pushed out, or unexpectedly blasted out on a UFO, you not only have to face a new situation, you have to rely on new tools and even new people in order to be safe.

And then your comfort zone expands. And your safe zone expands along with it. Your superpower portfolio grows too.
