On Tuesday, I shared with you the wonders of my experience at the Miles Davis tribute, performed at the Chicago Symphony Orchestra

We were treated to magical sounds from familiar instruments.

Rules were broken and reinvented within the realm of what already existed.

Boundaries can define your path.

But we tend to think those boundaries are tighter, closer, than they really are.

Do you really need someone else’s permission?

What else can you do when the current definition of “right” is no longer good enough?

Miles Davis treated the rules as optional.

Rule-breaking doesn’t have to mean chaos. But you won’t get new sounds from familiar instruments by staying within the rules.

You can be good playing within the rules. You can become transcendent with your

decision to break the rules that no longer meet your needs.
