Tuesday Tales: Disarmingly Wry

You’ve got an origin story and you might still be living it right now.

In a lot of these stories, there’s a moment where someone else sees your strengths before you do.

You expect that to come from a mentor.

My boss wasn’t much for mentoring. Not in his job description. Those were his words, not mine.

But another manager (boss level, different mall) was paying attention.

I never heard his comment directly. It came back to me secondhand:

“He’s disarmingly wry.”

Two words I understood but had never used to describe myself. Certainly not together.

But it stuck. And I loved it. Still do.

Because in that moment, I heard a voice I needed to hear and looked into a mirror I had never used before.

It’s funny: Right now, you might be playing a role in someone else’s origin story, just as they are playing a surprising role in yours.

So I’ll ask you:

What’s something special that somebody saw in you… before you saw it yourself?
