But Out! (But Builds Walls)

Are you ready to conduct a little experiment today?

Next time you are about to say or type the word “but,” swap it out for the word “and” instead.

To paraphrase my first work-study boss Joe M-ski, “but” builds walls. It tells your conversation partner or pen-pal that you are about to slam the brakes, stop, and change directions.

On the other hand, just like they taught me in the one improv class I ever took, the first rule is to say “yes, and.”  “And” means the thoughts and ideas are going to continue flowing. You are building bridges, not walls.

Try it and see. You’ll like the difference.

See you tomorrow!
