Face Front! Friday! What Mentoring Means
To answer the question I posed last Tuesday:
Are mentors suckers?
No way!
Well then, why would you be a mentor, anyway?
For the money?
Nope.
If you want money, be a coach or a trainer or a consultant.
Those are all fine options. Mentors can also earn a nice income from one of those pursuits.
Mentoring isn’t necessarily a way to make a living.
(cue the swelling background music)
But it is a way to make a life.
The psychologists would agree.
Whether we are trying turn our focus into creating things that will outlast ourselves, nurturing the next generation, avoiding stagnation, or just getting someone to help me set up my website, there are many reasons one might engage in a mentoring relationship.
No need for a label. We don’t have to call it mentoring. The word itself might scare people away from either side of the relationship.
But being helpful, sharing one’s knowledge and social capital… just being a mensch….
You’re not a sucker.
You’re a mentor.
So tell us: Why do YOU do it?

Your challenges are the beginning of your origin story.
